Rep. Kihuen: Tax Season Benefits Wall Street, Not Hardworking Americans

Statement

Date: April 17, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Today, as millions of Americans fret over their taxes and tax returns, Representative Ruben J. Kihuen released the following statement highlighting the shameless GOP tax plan as a giveaway full of goodies for special interests:

"For many Americans, tax day can bring headaches, stress, and paperwork but not for the GOP and their special interests. This year, Congressional Republicans passed a massive tax overhaul that will ultimately raise taxes on 86 million hard working Americans while providing staggering windfalls to Wall Street bankers and companies that are shipping jobs overseas. 83 percent of the tax cuts went to the wealthiest one percent. In the meantime, working class Americans are no longer able to deduct key expenses that lower their tax burden. In Nevada, the top five percent of earners will receive over seventy percent of the state's tax breaks.

"Despite repeated promises by the president and Congressional Republicans that their tax plan will help middle-class families, the bill has resulted in radical spikes in health insurance premiums, and will add trillions to our deficit paving the way for Republicans to cut bedrock programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. It's disappointing that Republicans are once again choosing to play nicely with Wall Street instead of looking out for the American people."
